Maritime Sector on Board?

International shipping contributes almost 3% to global carbon emissions. Last Friday, the 173 member countries of the International Maritime Organisation, agreed to reduce the shipping sector’s overall CO2 emissions by 50 percent by 2050. No actual timetable with actual measures has been presented and environmental organisations have expressed doubt if the target will be met. The graph above shows the CO2 output per kilogram per kilometer, per mode of transport. Transporting cargo on a mammoth container ship is almost 150 times more efficient than in a Boeing 747. (source)
